What is Assistive Technology?

If your child has low vision, or they’ve recently experienced a change in vision, it’s absolutely no different. There are many tools and devices to help your child access information, find their way around, connect with friends, or enjoy their favourite activities.

Some of these tools and technologies may be new to you, while others can connect to or enhance devices your child already owns, like a smartphone.

Assistive Technologies can be used at home, work, school, or while travelling in the community. As with any technology, it’s all about finding the right device to ensure your child is comfortable and supporting their goals to make things easier.

What tools and aids are available?

There are many different tools and technologies your child can access and learn to use. Some of the most common ones include:

  • Identification canes: used to let other people in the community know that your child has low vision or blindness. This is particularly useful in big crowds, on public transport, or in a busy city setting.
  • Support canes: used for extra balance while walking, and to make sure other people can see your child in the dark or during low light.
  • Miniguides: this hand-held device will detect objects in your child’s path, like poles, trees, or benches. Miniguides are best used together with a long cane or a Guide Dog.
  • iPhone GPS and smartphone apps: if your child has a smartphone, there are many useful features and applications they can access on their phone. We can help you select one that supports your child best and provide training to ensure they get the most out of it.
  • Guide Dogs: Guide Dogs are the optimal aid for fast and fluid movement. They can help your child travel through complex environments with confidence. Plus, they’re a dedicated companion with a unique personality matched to your child, your family, and your lifestyle!
Take the first step towards more confidence and independence.

Let’s get started. Where will you access this training and support?
