Wednesday 17th September 2025
Statement from Guide Dogs regarding Virgin Australia Pets in Cabins Trial
On September 17th 2025, Virgin Australia announced it will be trialling a Pets in Cabins service. Guide Dogs understands how cherished and important pets are in people’s lives. We welcome opportunities like the Virgin Australia Pets in Cabins trial for responsible pet owners to spend more time with their pets.
Guide Dogs has been working with Virgin Australia to ensure this trial is successful without adversely affecting Guide Dog Handlers. Our key objective is that this new service does not impact the important access rights and freedoms of people with low vision or blindness. We will always champion these essential outcomes with and on behalf of the people we serve.
Virgin Australia have made commitments that Guide Dog Handlers will not have their access rights affected and that Guide Dog Handlers will still have priority at check in, screening and boarding planes, and Guide Dogs will have priority at pet relief areas.
With over 65 years’ experience training, matching and providing specialist services Guide Dogs ensure our dogs have the temperament and characteristics that set them above a pet, and create an invaluable service for their Handlers to travel freely and move confidently about our country.
We will continue to work with Virgin Australia throughout the trial period to ensure the best outcomes for Guide Dog Handlers and the community.
