Video description
In this video we’ll experience the world from the perspective of a white cane user. First up we see James unfolding his white cane. The video is shot from a camera at head height, looking down at the paved footpath as James walks, sweeping his cane from side to side. James transitions to a concrete path and his cane detects an orange traffic cone, which he navigates around. Using his cane, James walks up stairs, then finds the tactile bumps which indicate a bus stop. We see James use his cane to cross a road, take a seat on a park bench, and walk up to a café counter. For a moment, James pauses as his cane hits the side of a ramp, then he makes his way around it.
A person stands on a footpath, scrolling through their phone. They step back in surprise when they realise James is walking by. Another person is standing on a path with their headphones on. They step back abruptly when James passes with his cane. James walks down a street and his cane nearly swipes into a stranger’s legs. The stranger has to quickly move out of the way.
James continues walking and is about to approach a bike rack when a person grabs his shoulders and turns him in a new direction. As he walks on towards a staircase, another stranger approaches and asks if James needs a hand. James replies that he is good, thanks, and makes his way up the staircase independently.
